Compression asphyxia is a type of asphyxia that occurs when a person's chest is compressed, preventing them from taking in enough oxygen. This can happen in a number of ways, including strangulation, hanging, being crushed under a heavy object, or being trapped in a confined space. It can also be caused by a medical condition called pneumothorax, in which the lungs collapse due to air pressure.

Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of compression asphyxia vary depending on the type and severity of the event. Common symptoms include difficulty breathing, chest pain, and a feeling of being unable to get enough air. In some cases, the person may become unconscious and require urgent medical attention.

Risk Factors

There are a number of risk factors that can increase the likelihood of experiencing compression asphyxia. These include being in a confined space, such as a car trunk or a closet; engaging in activities that involve being suspended in the air, such as bungee jumping or skydiving; and being in a precarious position, such as hanging from a ledge or window.

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment for compression asphyxia will depend on the type and severity of the event. If the person is conscious and breathing, medical attention should be sought immediately. If the person is unconscious, they should be taken to the hospital as soon as possible.

Prevention of compression asphyxia is mainly focused on avoiding situations that could potentially lead to it. People should be aware of the risks associated with activities such as bungee jumping and skydiving. It is also important to be mindful of the risks of being in a confined space, such as a car trunk or closet.
