Hello everyone,

I'm looking for help understanding the blood tests that are done for hemolysis. I'm not sure what kind of tests are done, or what the results mean. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about these tests? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Blood Tests for Hemolysis

Hemolysis is the breakdown of red blood cells, which can be caused by a variety of conditions. As a result, a number of tests may be ordered to confirm a diagnosis and determine the cause of hemolysis. Common blood tests used to diagnose hemolysis include complete blood count (CBC), peripheral blood smear, reticulocyte count, and serum haptoglobin.

Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A complete blood count (CBC) is used to measure the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the blood. It can help detect anemia, which is a common symptom of hemolysis.

Peripheral Blood Smear
A peripheral blood smear is used to examine a sample of red blood cells under a microscope. It can help detect abnormalities in the shape and size of the cells that may be indicative of hemolysis.

Reticulocyte Count
A reticulocyte count is used to measure the number of immature red blood cells in the blood. It can help determine whether hemolysis is the result of an underlying medical condition or is due to an environmental factor.

Serum Haptoglobin
Serum haptoglobin is a protein produced by the liver that binds to hemoglobin – a component of red blood cells. A decrease in serum haptoglobin levels can be an indicator of hemolysis.
