What are the types of deceleration in CTG

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and I was wondering if anyone could help me better understand the types of deceleration in CTG? I'm currently learning about fetal monitoring and I'm having trouble understanding the different types of decelerations that can be seen on the CTG trace. I would really appreciate any help or advice on this topic.

1. Fetal Decelerations

Fetal decelerations are a decrease in the fetal heart rate during labor. They can occur in response to a variety of stimuli, including decreased oxygen in the womb, the baby’s position, or contractions. Fetal decelerations can range from mild to severe, and can be short or prolonged.

2. Variable Decelerations

Variable decelerations are a decrease in the fetal heart rate in response to a contraction. They typically occur after the peak of the contraction and can be mild or severe. They can also be short or prolonged.

3. Late Decelerations

Late decelerations are a decrease in the fetal heart rate that occurs after the peak of the contraction. They can be mild or severe, and can be short or prolonged. Late decelerations can indicate a decrease in the baby’s oxygen levels.

4. Prolonged Decelerations

Prolonged decelerations are a decrease in the fetal heart rate that lasts for more than two minutes. This can indicate a decrease in the baby’s oxygen levels, and is typically followed by fetal monitoring and other medical interventions.
