1. Strangulation
Strangulation is a type of compression asphyxia which occurs when pressure is placed on the neck, restricting the flow of both air and blood. This can be done manually (e.g. by hand), or by using a ligature such as a rope or cord. Strangulation is the most common type of compression asphyxia, and can lead to death if not treated quickly.
2. Suffocation
Suffocation is a type of compression asphyxia which is caused by a blockage in the airway. This can be caused by something such as a pillow, plastic bag, or another object that restricts air flow. Suffocation can also be caused by a lack of oxygen, such as when a person is submerged in water.
3. Smothering
Smothering is a type of compression asphyxia which is caused by a person being physically held down, or by having something placed over the person’s face, blocking their airway. This type of asphyxia can occur during sleep, when a person is unconscious, or when a person is unable to move due to physical restraint.
4. Hanging
Hanging is a type of compression asphyxia which is caused by a person suspending themselves from an elevated point, such as a tree or a rope. This type of asphyxia is usually done intentionally, and can result in death if the person does not receive medical attention immediately.
5. Choking
Choking is a type of compression asphyxia which is caused by a person having an object lodged in their throat, blocking their airway. Choking can occur when a person is eating or drinking, or due to an object being placed in the person’s mouth. Choking can also be caused by a person being restrained in such a way that their airway is restricted.
