Risk Factors for High Cholesterol

High cholesterol can be caused by many different factors, including diet, genetics, and lifestyle. Some of the most common risk factors for high cholesterol include:

Diet: Eating foods high in saturated and trans fats, such as red meat, whole-fat dairy, and processed foods, increases cholesterol levels.

Genetics: If your family has a history of high cholesterol, you may be at an increased risk as well.

Lifestyle: Smoking and leading a sedentary lifestyle can also increase your risk of high cholesterol.

Age: As you age, your cholesterol levels naturally increase.

How to Lower Cholesterol

There are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of high cholesterol:

Exercise: Regular physical activity can help lower cholesterol levels.

Eat healthfully: Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help lower cholesterol levels.

Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight increases your risk of high cholesterol, so maintaining a healthy weight can help.

Quit smoking: Smoking can increase your risk of high cholesterol, so quitting can help lower your risk.

Take medication: If diet and lifestyle changes are not enough, your healthcare provider may recommend cholesterol-lowering medications.
