Symptoms of Pancreatitis
The most common symptom of pancreatitis is abdominal pain that is felt in the upper left side or middle of the abdomen. The pain may come on suddenly and be severe, or may be mild and come on gradually. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, rapid pulse, and jaundice.
Diagnosing Pancreatitis
To diagnose pancreatitis, a doctor may order blood tests, such as amylase and lipase levels, to measure the amount of enzymes produced by the pancreas. Imaging tests, such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI, may also be used to look at the pancreas and surrounding organs.
Markers for Pancreatitis
The most common markers used to diagnose pancreatitis are elevated levels of the enzymes amylase and lipase. Elevated levels of these enzymes indicate that the pancreas is not functioning properly. Other markers used to diagnose pancreatitis include imaging tests, such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
