Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for some help. I'm trying to learn about the five signs of Parkinson disease, but I'm having trouble finding reliable information. Can anyone here provide me with some insight?

I understand that the main signs of Parkinson disease can include tremors, stiffness, slow movement, and balance problems, but I'm not sure what the fifth sign is. Does anyone here know what it is? Are there any other symptoms I should be aware of?

I'd really appreciate any help or advice this forum can provide.

Signs of Parkinson Disease

Tremor: Tremor is one of the most common signs of Parkinson’s disease and can affect the hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face. Tremors are usually mild at first and will worsen as the condition progresses.

Bradykinesia: Bradykinesia is a condition that causes a person to have difficulty initiating and executing movements. This can affect how a person walks, talks, and writes.

Rigidity: Rigidity is when the muscles become stiff and difficult to move. This can cause pain and make it hard to do everyday activities.

Postural Instability: Postural instability is when a person has difficulty maintaining balance. This can lead to frequent falls and an increased risk of injury.

Freezing: Freezing is when a person's body temporarily stops moving. This can happen when a person is walking or standing. Freezing can lead to falls and other accidents.

1. Tremor: One of the most common signs of Parkinson’s disease is a tremor, which usually begins in one hand or arm. It can be described as a shaking or trembling, and can be present when the arm is resting or when the person is attempting to do something.

2. Rigidity: Stiffness and rigidity in the limbs and trunk is another common sign associated with Parkinson’s disease. This can cause pain and difficulty in moving, which can lead to gait and balance issues.

3. Bradykinesia: Bradykinesia is the medical term for slowness of movement. This can include reduced facial expressions, slower speech, and difficulty with multitasking.

4. Postural Instability: Postural instability is an impaired sense of balance, which can lead to difficulty walking. A person may experience a shuffling gait, freezing of the feet, and even falls.

5. Loss of Automatic Movements: Automatic movements are those that are usually done without any conscious thought, such as blinking or smiling. A person with Parkinson’s may experience a reduction in these movements.

The five most common signs of Parkinson Disease are tremor, slowness of movement (bradykinesia), stiffness of the limbs and trunk, impaired balance and coordination, and changes in speech. Tremor, or shaking, usually begins in a limb, often on one side of the body. Bradykinesia is a slowing down of movement that can cause difficulty initiating activities, such as getting out of bed or getting dressed. Stiffness of the limbs and trunk can cause difficulty with walking and other activities. Impaired balance and coordination can lead to increased falls. Changes in speech can include a soft, monotonous voice, and difficulty enunciating words.

Signs of Parkinson disease can be divided into early and late signs. Early signs include tremors, rigidity, and difficulty with coordination and balance. As the disease progresses, there may be a decrease in facial expression and speech, slow movement, and postural instability. Additionally, patients may experience difficulty with writing, difficulty swallowing, constipation, sleep disturbances, and cognitive changes. In the late stages of the disease, patients may experience freezing of gait, speech and swallowing difficulties, impaired posture, abnormal or slow movements, and an inability to initiate movements. All of these signs can vary in severity and may not be present in all cases.
