Subtitle: Diseases of Jaw Joint

The joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull is called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This joint is a complex joint that allows for movement of the lower jaw up and down, side to side, and forward and backward. When the jaw joint is not functioning properly, it can cause a variety of problems, such as pain, clicking and popping noises, and difficulty opening and closing the mouth. The following are some of the most common diseases of the jaw joint.

Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis, also known as “degenerative joint disease,” is the most common type of arthritis affecting the temporomandibular joint. It is caused by the breakdown of the cartilage that covers the joint surfaces, resulting in pain and decreased jaw movement.

Disc Displacement: Disc displacement occurs when the cushioning disc that separates the two bones of the jaw joint slips out of place. This can cause the jaw to lock in an open or closed position, as well as pain and clicking or popping noises.

Internal Derangement: Internal derangement of the jaw joint refers to any abnormality within the joint itself, such as a torn ligament or clogged joint cavity. It can cause pain, clicking and popping noises, and difficulty opening and closing the mouth.

TMJ Syndrome: TMJ syndrome is a collective term for any disorder that affects the jaw joint and its associated muscles. It is characterized by pain in the jaw joint, as well as pain in the face, neck, and shoulders.

Infection: Infection of the jaw joint, also known as “temporomandibular joint infection,” is caused by bacteria or viruses. It can cause pain, redness, swelling, and difficulty opening and closing the mouth.

Trauma: Trauma to the jaw joint can be caused by a direct blow or by the force of a strong muscle contraction. It can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty opening and closing the mouth.

Treating diseases of the jaw joint depends on the underlying cause. Treatment options may include medications, physical therapy, injections, and surgery. If you have any symptoms of a jaw joint disorder, it is important to see your doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and to discuss treatment options.
