Diagnosis of Hemolytic Anemia
Physical Exam
A physical exam may be performed to look for signs and symptoms of anemia, such as pale skin, rapid breathing, and a rapid heart rate. The doctor may also check the spleen and liver for enlargement.
Lab Tests
Lab tests can be used to confirm the diagnosis of hemolytic anemia. These tests may include a complete blood count (CBC) to measure the number of red blood cells, a reticulocyte count to measure the number of young red blood cells, and a blood smear to examine the shape and size of the red blood cells.
Imaging Tests
Imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and CT scans can be used to look for abnormalities in the spleen, liver, and other organs.
Genetic Tests
Genetic tests may be performed to identify any underlying genetic disorders that may be causing the hemolytic anemia.
