Symptoms of Hemolytic Anemia

The most common symptoms of hemolytic anemia are fatigue, pale skin, dark urine, shortness of breath, and jaundice. Other symptoms may include coldness in the hands and feet, chest pain, and an enlarged spleen or liver.

Diagnostic Tests

To diagnose hemolytic anemia, a doctor will order a complete blood count (CBC) and other laboratory tests to measure the amount of red blood cells and hemoglobin in the blood. The doctor may also order a bone marrow biopsy to check for any abnormalities in the bone marrow process of red blood cell production. Other tests that may be used to diagnose hemolytic anemia include a reticulocyte count, a direct antiglobulin test, and a Coombs test.

Treatment

The treatment for hemolytic anemia depends on the cause and severity of the condition. Treatment may include medications such as corticosteroids or immune suppressants. In some cases, a blood transfusion may be necessary. In rare cases, a bone marrow transplant may be needed.
