Complications of Hemolytic Transfusion Reaction

Hemolytic transfusion reactions can cause serious health complications. These can include:

Anemia: Anemia is a condition that occurs when there is a decrease in red blood cells. It can result in fatigue, pallor, and shortness of breath.

Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS): HUS is a complication of hemolytic transfusion reactions that can lead to kidney failure, anemia, and low platelet count.

Acute Intravascular Hemolysis (AIH): AIH is a life-threatening complication of hemolytic transfusion reactions that can cause severe damage to the kidneys, lungs, and other organs.

Fluid Overload: Fluid overload can occur when too much fluid is given during a transfusion. This can cause serious complications, such as swelling, pulmonary edema, and heart failure.

Serious Infections: Transfusion-related infections can occur when blood or blood products are contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens. These infections can be life-threatening.

Transfusion-Related Acute Lung Injury (TRALI): TRALI is a complication of hemolytic transfusion reactions that can cause severe lung damage and respiratory failure.

Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD): GVHD is a complication of transfusion reactions that can occur when the donor's immune cells attack the recipient's cells. It can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fever, rash, and organ damage.
