Definition of Fetal Distress
Fetal distress is a medical term used to describe a condition in which a baby is not receiving enough oxygen before, during, or after birth. It is an emergency situation and can cause significant damage to the baby if not treated quickly.
Classification of Fetal Distress
Fetal distress is classified into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe.
Mild fetal distress is usually caused by a brief decrease in oxygen levels or a short-term restriction of the baby's movements. It is often identified by a decrease in the baby's heart rate and may be accompanied by signs of low oxygen levels such as pale skin and blue lips.
Moderate fetal distress is usually caused by a prolonged decrease in oxygen levels or a prolonged restriction of the baby's movements. It is often identified by an increase in the baby's heart rate and may be accompanied by signs of low oxygen levels such as pale skin and blue lips.
Severe fetal distress is usually caused by an acute decrease in oxygen levels or a prolonged restriction of the baby's movements. It is often identified by a very high heart rate and may be accompanied by signs of low oxygen levels such as pale skin and blue lips. In some cases, severe fetal distress can lead to brain damage or even death.
