Mental disorders are conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feelings, mood, behavior, and ability to relate to others. Mental disorders can be caused by a variety of factors, including biological and environmental factors. The nine most common mental disorders are:
Anxiety Disorders: Anxiety disorders are a category of mental health disorders that cause a person to feel fear, worry, or unease. Common anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Depression: Depression is a mood disorder that causes a person to feel a deep sense of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness. Depression can affect how a person feels, thinks, and behaves.
Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes a person to have extreme shifts in their mood. These shifts can range from feeling very low and depressed to feeling very high and energized.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): ADHD is a disorder that affects a person’s ability to pay attention and control their behavior. It is most often diagnosed in childhood, but it can also affect adults.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): PTSD is a disorder that can develop after a person has experienced a traumatic event. Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, nightmares, difficulty sleeping, and feeling anxious or on edge.
Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, and make decisions. Symptoms of schizophrenia include hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking.
Personality Disorders: Personality disorders are a group of mental health disorders that affect how a person thinks, feels, and behaves in social situations. Common personality disorders include borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder.
Eating Disorders: Eating disorders are a group of mental health disorders that involve an unhealthy relationship with food. Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): OCD is a mental disorder that causes a person to have intrusive thoughts and behaviors. Common obsessions include handwashing, counting, and checking. Common compulsions include cleaning, ordering, and hoarding.
