Antipsychotic Drugs
Antipsychotic drugs are medications used to treat mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic disorders. These medications are also known as neuroleptics or major tranquilizers. There are six main types of antipsychotic medications, including first-generation antipsychotics, second-generation antipsychotics, atypical antipsychotics, long-acting injectable antipsychotics, and the recently introduced third-generation antipsychotics.
First-Generation Antipsychotics
First-generation antipsychotics are also known as typical antipsychotics and are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic disorders. Examples of first-generation antipsychotics include: chlorpromazine, haloperidol, perphenazine, fluphenazine, thioridazine, and trifluoperazine.
Second-Generation Antipsychotics
Second-generation antipsychotics are also known as atypical antipsychotics and are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic disorders. Examples of second-generation antipsychotics include: aripiprazole, risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, ziprasidone, and paliperidone.
Atypical Antipsychotics
Atypical antipsychotics are newer medications that are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic disorders. Examples of atypical antipsychotics include: lurasidone, cariprazine, asenapine, clozapine, and iloperidone.
Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics
Long-acting injectable antipsychotics are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic disorders. These medications are given as an injection every two to four weeks. Examples of long-acting injectable antipsychotics include: paliperidone palmitate, risperidone palmitate, and aripiprazole lauroxil.
Third-Generation Antipsychotics
Third-generation antipsychotics are newer medications that are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic disorders. Examples of third-generation antipsychotics include: lurasidone, cariprazine, asenapine, and brexpiprazole.
