Most Rare Mental Disorders
Mental disorders come in many shapes and sizes, and some are extremely rare. Here are five of the rarest mental disorders that are known today:
1. Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder characterized by distorted thinking, abnormal behavior, and difficulty communicating and relating to others. It is estimated that approximately 1 percent of the population has schizophrenia, making it one of the rarest mental disorders.
2. Cotard’s Syndrome: Cotard’s Syndrome, or Walking Corpse Syndrome, is an extremely rare mental disorder in which the sufferer believes that they are dead, decaying, or have lost internal organs or blood. It is estimated that only around 100 cases of Cotard’s Syndrome have been reported since it was first described in the late 1800s.
3. Capgras Syndrome: Capgras Syndrome is a rare mental disorder in which a person believes that a close friend or family member has been replaced by an imposter. This disorder is believed to be caused by a combination of neurological and psychological factors, and it is estimated that only around 100 cases have been reported in the scientific literature.
4. Alice in Wonderland Syndrome: Alice in Wonderland Syndrome, or AIS, is a rare mental disorder in which the sufferer experiences distortions in time, size, and body image. It is believed to be caused by a combination of psychological and neurological factors, and it is estimated that only around 100 cases have been reported in the scientific literature.
5. Prosopagnosia: Prosopagnosia, or face blindness, is a rare mental disorder in which the sufferer is unable to recognize faces, even of people they know. It is estimated that only around 2 percent of the population has prosopagnosia, making it one of the rarest mental disorders.
