Introduction
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It is a fast-growing cancer that is characterized by uncontrolled growth of abnormal white blood cells, called blasts. The disease is divided into three stages, based on the number of blasts in the bone marrow. The stages are:
Stage 1: Less than 5% of blasts in the bone marrow
Stage 2: 5%-20% of blasts in the bone marrow
Stage 3: More than 20% of blasts in the bone marrow
Symptoms of AML
The symptoms of AML depend on the stage of the disease. In the early stages, there may be no symptoms at all, or the patient may have mild symptoms such as fatigue, fever, or easy bruising. As the disease progresses, the patient may develop more severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, night sweats, and anemia. In the later stages, the patient may have difficulty breathing, and may develop infections and other complications.
Treatment of AML
The treatment of AML depends on the stage of the disease. In the early stages, treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation, or bone marrow transplant. In the later stages, treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation, and bone marrow transplant. The goal of treatment is to control the disease and prevent it from progressing.
