Subtitle: Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are mental health conditions that affect how people think, feel, and behave. They are long-term patterns of thoughts and behaviors that cause serious problems with relationships and work. The 10 personality disorders are defined in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).

1. Paranoid Personality Disorder

People with paranoid personality disorder (PPD) are generally characterized by having a suspicious attitude and a lack of trust in others. They may be overly defensive and quick to take offense. They may also be preoccupied with doubts about the loyalty and trustworthiness of those around them.

2. Schizoid Personality Disorder

People with schizoid personality disorder (SPD) tend to be socially isolated and emotionally detached. They may appear aloof and have difficulty forming close relationships. They often lack the desire or capacity for social relationships, and may be indifferent to praise or criticism.

3. Schizotypal Personality Disorder

People with schizotypal personality disorder (STPD) may experience unusual thoughts or perceptions, such as believing they can read other people’s minds. They may also have strange behaviors, including dressing inappropriately. They often have difficulty forming close relationships due to a fear of rejection.

4. Antisocial Personality Disorder

People with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) may display a lack of conscience, disregard for others’ feelings, and a willingness to manipulate or exploit others. They may also engage in criminal activity and have difficulty controlling their impulses.

5. Borderline Personality Disorder

People with borderline personality disorder (BPD) may experience intense episodes of anger, depression, and anxiety that can last from a few hours to days. They may also have unstable relationships, distorted self-image, and impulsive behaviors.

6. Histrionic Personality Disorder

People with histrionic personality disorder (HPD) may be excessively emotional and dramatic and display attention-seeking behavior. They may be overly concerned with their physical appearance, be easily influenced by others, and have difficulty forming and maintaining relationships.

7. Narcissistic Personality Disorder

People with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) may be preoccupied with their own thoughts, feelings, and desires. They may also be excessively vain, have a grandiose sense of self-importance, and an excessive need for admiration.

8. Avoidant Personality Disorder

People with avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) may have a fear of rejection and disapproval, and may be excessively shy and sensitive to criticism. They may also have difficulty forming relationships due to a fear of being ridiculed or rejected.

9. Dependent Personality Disorder

People with dependent personality disorder (DPD) may be excessively submissive and clingy. They may have difficulty making decisions and may look to others for guidance. They may also have an excessive need for approval and reassurance.

10. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder

People with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) may be preoccupied with details, rules, and lists. They may also be excessively devoted to work and productivity and have difficulty delegating tasks. They may be rigid and inflexible in their thinking and be unwilling to compromise.

The 10 personality disorders classified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) are: paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic, avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive. These disorders are characterized by maladaptive patterns of behavior, cognition, and inner experience that impair functioning in various social or occupational settings. Symptoms usually include inflexible and unhealthy patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that cause distress and difficulty in relationships. Treatment usually involves psychological therapy and, in some cases, medication.

Personality disorders are mental health conditions that affect how an individual thinks, feels, and behaves. While they are not caused by a single event, they are often associated with stressful or traumatic life experiences, including abuse or neglect. They can cause significant impairments in an individual’s ability to function socially, professionally, and personally.

The 10 personality disorders are:

1. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD): BPD is characterized by unstable emotions, impulsivity, and difficulty maintaining relationships. People with BPD may be prone to self-harm, suicidal behavior, and substance abuse.

2. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD): NPD is characterized by an excessive need for admiration and an inflated sense of self-importance. People with NPD may be unable to handle criticism, have a sense of entitlement, and be unwilling to take responsibility for their actions.

3. Avoidant Personality Disorder (APD): APD is characterized by a sense of extreme social inhibition and a fear of rejection. People with APD may be overly sensitive to criticism, have difficulty forming relationships, and have a hard time expressing themselves.

4. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD): OCPD is characterized by a preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control. People with OCPD may be overly rigid and inflexible, have difficulty making decisions, and be unwilling to delegate tasks.

5. Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD): PPD is characterized by a pervasive distrust of others and a heightened sense of suspicion. People with PPD may be overly secretive, have difficulty trusting others, and be hypervigilant to potential threats.

6. Schizoid Personality Disorder (SPD): SPD is characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships and a preference for solitary activities. People with SPD may be emotionally distant, socially isolated, and preoccupied with their own thoughts and feelings.

7. Schizotypal Personality Disorder (STPD): STPD is characterized by odd or eccentric behavior, difficulty forming relationships, and paranoia. People with STPD may have difficulty understanding social cues, have delusions or hallucinations, and be prone to magical thinking.

8. Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD): HPD is characterized by excessive emotionality and attention-seeking behavior. People with HPD may be overly dramatic, have difficulty controlling their emotions, and be easily
