Symptoms of a Miscarriage

Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before the fetus is able to survive outside the womb. It is also known as spontaneous abortion. The most common symptoms of a miscarriage are vaginal bleeding, cramping, and tissue passing from the vagina. However, some women may experience only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a miscarriage so that medical attention can be sought if needed.

Vaginal Bleeding
Vaginal bleeding is the most common sign of a miscarriage. It may be light or heavy and may contain clots. If the bleeding is heavy or accompanied by severe cramping, seek medical attention immediately.

Stomach Cramps
Mild to severe cramps in the lower abdomen may indicate a miscarriage. These cramps may be similar to period cramps and may come and go. It is important to contact your doctor if the cramps are accompanied by heavy bleeding.

Back Pain
Mild to severe back pain may occur during a miscarriage. This pain may be similar to what is felt during a normal menstrual cycle. However, if the pain is intense or accompanied by heavy bleeding, seek medical attention.

Passing Tissue
If a miscarriage is occurring, the tissue of the pregnancy may pass from the vagina. This tissue may be accompanied by heavy bleeding and severe cramping. If this occurs, seek medical attention immediately.

Fluid Discharge
A miscarriage may be accompanied by a fluid discharge from the vagina. This discharge may be pink, brown, or red in color. If this occurs, contact your doctor immediately.

Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week of gestation. Symptoms can vary, but common signs of miscarriage include vaginal bleeding, cramping and pain in the abdomen or lower back, passing tissue or fluid from the vagina, and a decrease in symptoms of pregnancy. Other potential symptoms include chills, fever, weakness, and nausea. It is important to seek medical attention if you think you may have experienced a miscarriage.

1. Vaginal Bleeding - One of the most common signs of a miscarriage is vaginal bleeding. This can be light to heavy, and may be accompanied by cramping, or it might be the only symptom.

2. Stomach Cramps - Severe cramps, similar to menstrual cramps, can be a sign of a miscarriage. This pain is usually felt in the lower abdomen and can come and go.

3. Back Pain - Back pain can be a symptom of a miscarriage, particularly if it is accompanied by bleeding and cramping.

4. Passing Tissue - If tissue is passed from the vagina, it is a sign of a miscarriage. This can be accompanied by a heavy flow of blood.

5. No Fetal Heartbeat - An ultrasound can be used to check for a fetal heartbeat. If there is no heartbeat, it may be a sign of a miscarriage. Other tests, such as a blood test, can also be used to confirm a miscarriage.

Symptoms of a miscarriage can vary depending on how far along the pregnancy is, but the most common symptoms are:

1. Vaginal bleeding or spotting, which may be light or heavy and can be accompanied by cramping or pain in the abdomen or back.

2. Passage of tissue from the vagina.

3. Severe abdominal or back pain.

4. A decrease in the intensity of pregnancy symptoms, such as a decrease in morning sickness or breast tenderness.

5. The absence of fetal heart tones during an ultrasound. This is usually a sign of a non-viable pregnancy.

In addition to these symptoms, some women may experience nausea, fatigue, and an increase in vaginal discharge. If any of these symptoms are experienced, it is important to contact a medical professional as soon as possible.
