Signs of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that is characterized by extreme shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. People who have this condition may experience periods of extreme highs (mania) and lows (depression). While the exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, it is believed to be related to changes in brain chemistry, hormones, and environmental factors.
Mania: Mania is a period of abnormally elevated mood and increased energy levels. During this time, people may be more talkative than usual, have a decreased need for sleep, and display impulsive or reckless behaviors.
Hypomania: Hypomania is a less severe form of mania. During this period, people may have increased energy, be more talkative, and be more productive than usual. However, unlike with mania, people with hypomania may not experience any impairments in their daily functioning.
Depression: Depression is a period of low mood and decreased energy levels. During this time, people may feel sad, hopeless, and have difficulty concentrating or sleeping.
Mixed Episode: A mixed episode is a period when a person experiences both mania and depression at the same time. People may feel agitated, have difficulty sleeping, and be excessively irritable or anxious.
Rapid Cycling: Rapid cycling is when a person experiences four or more episodes of mania, hypomania, or depression in a 12-month period. People who experience rapid cycling may have difficulty managing their mood swings and may require more intensive treatment.
