Adenovirus is a type of virus that can cause a variety of illnesses in humans. While most adenovirus infections are mild and cause no symptoms, they can be serious in some cases. People who have weakened immune systems due to other illnesses or medical treatments are particularly at risk of severe illness from adenovirus.
Symptoms of Adenovirus
Adenovirus infections can cause a wide variety of symptoms, depending on which type of virus is involved. In general, symptoms can include fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose, pink eye (conjunctivitis), and stomach upset. Some types of adenovirus may also cause diarrhea, vomiting, and rash. In some cases, adenovirus infections can cause more serious illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and inflammation of the brain or heart.
Treatment of Adenovirus
Most adenovirus infections do not require treatment, as the body's immune system will usually clear the virus on its own. However, in severe cases, antiviral medications may be prescribed to help reduce the severity and duration of the illness. In some cases, supportive care in a hospital setting may also be necessary.
Prevention of Adenovirus Infection
The best way to prevent adenovirus infection is to practice good hygiene. This includes washing your hands frequently with soap and water, avoiding close contact with people who are sick, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Vaccines are available that can protect against some types of adenovirus, but they are not yet widely available.
