What Is a Benign Tumor?
A benign tumor is a growth that does not spread to other parts of the body and is not life-threatening. Benign tumors can occur in any part of the body, but they are most common in the skin, breast, and brain. Benign tumors can grow in size, but they do not have the potential to spread to other parts of the body.
Should a Benign Tumor Be Removed?
Whether or not a benign tumor should be removed depends on the size, location, and type of tumor. Generally, if a benign tumor is not causing any symptoms or interfering with any bodily functions, it may not need to be removed. If, however, the tumor is causing pain, interfering with organ function, or growing in size, it should be surgically removed. Additionally, if the tumor is in a hazardous location, such as near a nerve or other vital organ, it should be removed. A doctor will be able to provide advice on the best course of action for a particular tumor.
