Pancreatitis: An Overview
What is Pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, a large organ located in the upper abdomen behind the stomach. The pancreas produces enzymes that are necessary for digestion as well as hormones such as insulin that help regulate blood sugar levels. Pancreatitis can be acute or chronic. Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly and can be very severe, while chronic pancreatitis is a long-term condition.
What are the Symptoms of Pancreatitis?
Symptoms of pancreatitis can include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. In severe cases, pancreatitis can cause life-threatening complications such as shock, organ failure, and even death.
Is Pancreatitis Permanent?
Pancreatitis is not usually a permanent condition. Most cases of acute pancreatitis resolve within a few days with treatment. Chronic pancreatitis, however, is a long-term condition that can cause significant complications. Treatment of chronic pancreatitis may include medications, pancreatic enzyme supplements, and/or surgery.
