I'm looking for help understanding if Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is classified as a personality disorder according to the DSM 5. Can anyone explain the criteria and why it is or isn't classified as such? I'm trying to understand the DSM 5 better and would really appreciate any insight other forum users can provide.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a type of anxiety disorder classified in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a personality disorder. It is characterized by recurrent and persistent thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are experienced as intrusive and distressing. People with OCD often feel compelled to perform repetitive behaviors or rituals in order to reduce the distress caused by the thoughts and feelings.

Intrusive Thoughts

People with OCD experience intrusive, obsessive thoughts, which can range from worries about contamination to persistent doubts about relationships or decisions. These thoughts are difficult to control and can be disruptive to the individual’s life.

Compulsive Behavior

OCD is also characterized by compulsive behaviors, which are carried out to alleviate the distress caused by the intrusive thoughts. These behaviors may include cleaning, checking, repeating words or phrases, or counting. Compulsive behaviors can take up a significant amount of time and can interfere with the individual’s daily activities.

Diagnosis

In order to be diagnosed with OCD, an individual must meet the criteria outlined in the DSM-5. These criteria include experiencing intrusive thoughts and engaging in compulsive behaviors that are distressing and interfere with the individual’s life. A mental health professional will assess the individual’s symptoms and make a diagnosis based on the criteria outlined in the DSM-5.
