Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a type of mental illness that is characterized by unstable moods, behavior, and relationships with other people. It is estimated that approximately 1.6% of the adult population in the United States has BPD. People with BPD may experience intense episodes of anger, depression, and anxiety that can last for several hours or days. They may also have difficulty controlling their emotions and behavior and may act impulsively.

Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder

People with BPD may experience a wide range of symptoms, including:

• Intense fear of abandonment

• Unstable relationships with other people

• Rapid changes in moods
• Impulsive behaviors, such as substance abuse, reckless driving, or binge eating
• Self-harming behaviors such as cutting or burning
• Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
• Feelings of emptiness and loneliness
• Intense anger or difficulty controlling anger
• Difficulty trusting other people

Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder

BPD is a serious mental illness that requires treatment. Treatment for BPD may include psychotherapy, medication, and support groups. Psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or dialectical behavior therapy, can help people with BPD learn to manage their symptoms and regulate their emotions. Medications, such as antidepressants or mood stabilizers, may also be helpful in managing some of the symptoms of BPD. Support groups can provide a safe space for people with BPD to connect with others who understand their experiences.
