Hello everyone! I'm looking for help understanding something about AST in muscle and liver. I've heard that AST can be found in both muscle and liver, but I'm not sure if that's true. Does anyone have any insight or experience with AST in either muscle or liver? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

AST (aspartate aminotransferase) is an enzyme present in the liver and skeletal muscle. It is found in the cytoplasm of liver cells and in the intermembrane space of muscle cells. AST is an enzyme involved in the transfer of an amino group from aspartate to alpha-ketoglutarate, forming oxaloacetate and glutamate. It is an important biomarker for assessing the health of the liver and muscle tissue, and its levels are usually increased in the event of liver or muscle damage.
