Asphyxia and hypoxia are two medical terms that are often confused. While they are both conditions in which the body is deprived of oxygen, there are important differences between them that are important to understand.

Asphyxia

Asphyxia is a condition in which the body is deprived of oxygen due to an external force, such as strangulation or suffocation. It is a direct result of being unable to breathe, and can quickly cause death.

Hypoxia

Hypoxia is a condition in which the body is deprived of oxygen, but without any external force. Hypoxia can be caused by a variety of factors, including altitude sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, or a lack of oxygen in the environment. It is a more gradual condition than asphyxia, and can be treated if caught early enough.
