Hey everyone,

I'm a medical student and I'm trying to learn more about CPR. I wanted to ask if anyone can help me with a question I have about how often you should stop CPR to check for breathing and a pulse. Does anyone have any advice or experience they could share with me? I'd really appreciate it.

Checking for Breathing and a Pulse

When administering CPR, it is important to check for breathing and a pulse. The American Red Cross recommends that healthcare providers check for breathing and a pulse every two minutes. If there is no response and the person is not breathing or has no pulse, they should continue with CPR until help arrives.

Breathing

The healthcare provider should look for chest movement, listen for any sounds of breathing, and feel for air on their cheek to check for breathing. If no signs of breathing are present, then the healthcare provider should begin CPR.

Pulse

The healthcare provider should check the person’s carotid artery for a pulse. If a pulse is not detected, then the provider should continue with CPR until help arrives.

Conclusion

When administering CPR, it is important to check for breathing and a pulse every two minutes. If there is no response and the person is not breathing or has no pulse, then the healthcare provider should continue with CPR until help arrives.
