Time Frame
The amount of time it takes to lose oxygen to the brain depends on the individual and the situation. Generally, it will take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes to lose oxygen to the brain. For people who are experiencing anoxia, or a lack of oxygen, the time frame can be significantly shorter.
Effects of Oxygen Deprivation
When the brain is deprived of oxygen, several things can happen. Depending on the severity of the deprivation, a person can experience a range of symptoms such as confusion, dizziness, and slurred speech. In extreme cases, oxygen deprivation can cause coma, seizures, and even death.
Treatment
Treatment for oxygen deprivation is dependent on the severity of the symptoms. If a person is experiencing mild symptoms such as confusion or dizziness, simply providing them with oxygen can help to alleviate these issues. In severe cases, the person may need to be placed on a ventilator to help them breathe. In the most extreme cases, the person may require resuscitation.
