Allergic Reaction Duration
An allergic reaction can vary in duration, depending on the type and severity of the reaction. For most people, an allergic reaction can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. In some cases, an allergic reaction may last longer than a few days, requiring medical attention.
IgE-mediated allergic reactions are the most common type of reaction and usually occur within minutes of exposure to an allergen. These reactions are often severe, causing anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that requires emergency medical attention. If anaphylaxis is not treated promptly, it can be fatal.
Non-IgE-mediated allergic reactions, also known as delayed hypersensitivity reactions, are less common and usually occur several hours after exposure to an allergen. These reactions may last for several days, but typically do not require medical treatment.
Contact Dermatitis is a type of allergic reaction that occurs when the skin comes into contact with an allergen. This type of reaction usually appears within a few hours of contact and may last for several days. It usually resolves on its own, but topical medications may be needed to alleviate the symptoms.
Allergic Conjunctivitis is a type of allergic reaction that occurs when the eyes come into contact with an allergen. Symptoms usually appear within minutes and may last for several days. Treatment may include eye drops, antihistamines, and/or decongestants.
No matter what type of allergic reaction you are experiencing, it is important to seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen. It is also important to identify and avoid the allergen that triggered your reaction in order to prevent future reactions.
