Transmission of Sexually Transmitted Infections
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are spread through sexual contact, including oral, vaginal, and anal sex. STIs can be spread through skin-to-skin contact, even if there is no penetration.
Skin-to-Skin Contact: STIs can be passed through contact with an infected person’s skin, even if there is no penetration. This includes any contact with the genitals, anus, or mouth.
Vaginal Sex: STIs can be passed from one partner to another through unprotected vaginal sex. This includes contact with a partner’s genital fluids, such as semen or vaginal fluid.
Anal Sex: STIs can be passed from one partner to another through unprotected anal sex. This includes contact with a partner’s genital fluids, such as semen or anal fluid.
Oral Sex: STIs can be passed from one partner to another through unprotected oral sex. This includes contact with a partner’s genital fluids, such as semen or vaginal fluid.
Sharing Sex Toys: STIs can be passed from one partner to another through sharing sex toys. Any toys that come into contact with a partner’s genital fluids, such as semen or vaginal fluid, can transmit STIs.
Needle Sharing: STIs can be passed from one person to another through sharing needles. This includes needles used for injecting drugs, tattoos, piercings, and other activities.
Mother-to-Child Transmission: STIs can be passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy, labor, or delivery. This is known as mother-to-child transmission (MTCT).
