A bipolar person may experience extreme shifts in mood and behavior, from episodes of extreme highs (mania) to episodes of extreme lows (depression). During manic episodes, a person may feel an elevated mood, an increase in energy, increased talkativeness, a decreased need for sleep, and increased impulsivity. They may also engage in risky behavior like spending sprees, engaging in unprotected sex, or using drugs or alcohol. During depressive episodes, a person may feel a decrease in energy, a decrease in motivation, difficulty concentrating, feelings of worthlessness, and suicidal thoughts.
Bipolar disorder can also cause a person to have difficulty functioning in day-to-day activities. This can include difficulty managing stress, problems with relationships due to sudden mood swings, difficulty holding down a job, and difficulty with self-care. It is important to seek treatment if you or someone you know is exhibiting these symptoms. Treatment may include medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle modifications.
