"Hello everyone! I'm looking for some help with persistent allergic rhinitis. Does anyone know how to treat it? I've tried using over-the-counter antihistamines with limited success. Are there any other treatments that I can try? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Persistent Allergic Rhinitis

What is Persistent Allergic Rhinitis?

Persistent allergic rhinitis is a type of allergic reaction that is caused by environmental allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. It can cause sneezing, itching, runny nose, post-nasal drip, and congestion. It can also cause fatigue, headaches, and difficulty sleeping.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will take a medical history and ask about your symptoms. They may also recommend skin testing to identify the specific allergens that are causing your symptoms.

Treatment

The goal of treatment for persistent allergic rhinitis is to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. Treatment may include:

• Allergy medications, such as antihistamines, nasal sprays, and decongestants

• Allergen avoidance, such as keeping windows closed during pollen season and using dust covers on beds and pillows

• Allergen immunotherapy, which involves regular injections of small amounts of the allergen to build up your tolerance to it

• Nasal irrigation, which involves using a saline solution to rinse out your nasal passages

• Surgery, if all other treatments have failed

Living with Persistent Allergic Rhinitis

Persistent allergic rhinitis can be effectively managed with the help of an allergist. Depending on the severity and type of your allergies, your doctor may prescribe medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, corticosteroids, or immunotherapy. Immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, can help reduce the sensitivity of your immune system to allergens. Additionally, you should consider avoiding exposure to triggers that can worsen your symptoms, such as dust, mold, pet dander, and cigarette smoke. It is also helpful to keep your home and workplace clean and well ventilated. With proper treatment and lifestyle changes, you should be able to successfully manage your condition.

Firstly, it is important to identify the allergen and avoid contact with it wherever possible. Secondly, it is worth considering medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays to reduce the symptoms. Persistent allergic rhinitis can be managed with antihistamines, nasal sprays, decongestants, and allergen immunotherapy. Allergen immunotherapy involves gradually exposing your body to increasing amounts of allergens over a period of time to reduce your sensitivity to them. Additionally, you can reduce your exposure to allergens by avoiding triggers, such as pollen, dust, mold, and pet dander, and using an air filter in your home.
