If you suspect that someone is suffocating, you should take immediate action.

Call 911: Call emergency services immediately if you think someone is suffocating.

Check for signs of breathing: Check for signs of breathing by listening for the sound of breathing and looking for movement in the chest.

Provide rescue breathing: If the person is not breathing or only gasping, provide rescue breathing by covering the person’s mouth and nose with your mouth and blowing two breaths into the person’s lungs.

Perform chest compressions: If the person is not breathing or only gasping, provide chest compressions by pressing firmly and evenly on the center of the person’s chest with the heel of one hand.

Prevention

Suffocation can be prevented by avoiding activities and environments where it is likely to occur.

Avoid choking hazards: Keep small objects out of reach of young children and avoid eating foods that are known to be choking hazards.

Avoid smoke-filled environments: Remain aware of the risk of smoke inhalation in fires and other smoke-filled environments.

Be aware of potential health hazards: Be aware of potential health hazards in the home or workplace, such as toxic fumes or inadequate ventilation.

If a person is suffocating, you should immediately call emergency services. In the meantime, you should start performing CPR if you are trained to do so. If you are not trained in CPR, then you should try to help the person by positioning them on their back and checking their airway for any blockages. If you find something blocking the airway, you should try to remove it with your fingers. If the person is unconscious, you should tilt their head back and lift their chin to open their airway. Finally, you should look for any signs of breathing and perform rescue breaths if needed.

Q: What do I do if someone is unconscious and not breathing?

A: If someone is unconscious and not breathing, it is a medical emergency and you should call 911 immediately. If you are trained in CPR, start chest compressions and rescue breaths while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive. If you are not trained in CPR, continue to monitor the patient for signs of life and follow the dispatcher's instructions until emergency personnel arrive.
