Symptoms of Nasal Allergies

Nasal allergies, also known as allergic rhinitis, are caused by irritation of the mucous membranes in your nose from allergens like pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander. Symptoms of nasal allergies include sneezing, itching, runny nose, nasal congestion, and watery eyes.

Diagnosing Nasal Allergies

A qualified medical professional can diagnose nasal allergies by taking a thorough medical history and physical exam. They may also recommend allergy testing to determine which allergens are causing the symptoms.

Treatment of Nasal Allergies

Treating nasal allergies typically involves avoiding allergens and taking medications to reduce symptoms. Allergy medications can include antihistamines, decongestants, corticosteroids, and allergen immunotherapy.

Preventing Nasal Allergies

The best way to prevent nasal allergies is to reduce exposure to allergens. This can include avoiding activities that stir up allergens, using air filters in the home, and washing bedding frequently.

Nasal allergies can be difficult to manage, but there are some things you can do to reduce their symptoms. Start by avoiding common allergens like pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and mold by keeping your home and office clean and ventilated. Use a HEPA filter in your home to reduce indoor allergens, and wear a face mask when outdoors. Over-the-counter nasal sprays, antihistamines, and decongestants can also help. Additionally, some people have found relief through allergen immunotherapy, which involves gradually exposing the body to allergens in increasing doses. Finally, if all else fails, it's important to see an allergy specialist for diagnosis and treatment.

"I've had nasal allergies for years and have tried many different treatments. Any ideas on what else I can try?"

It is recommended that you visit an allergist to help identify the specific allergens that are causing your allergies. Once that is established, you can begin to explore lifestyle changes to reduce your exposure to those allergens. This can include things such as avoiding certain foods, eliminating pet dander, and using air filters in your home. Additionally, you may want to consider allergy shots or immunotherapy, which can help reduce the severity of your symptoms. Finally, there are also many over-the-counter and prescription medications available to help control your nasal allergies.
