Asphyxiants are substances that cause asphyxiation or suffocation. Asphyxiants can be divided into two categories: physical asphyxiants and chemical asphyxiants.
Physical Asphyxiants
Physical asphyxiants are substances that displace oxygen in the air, making it impossible for the body to absorb enough oxygen for normal breathing. Examples of physical asphyxiants include nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium, argon, methane, and nitrous oxide.
Chemical Asphyxiants
Chemical asphyxiants are substances that cause asphyxiation by combining with oxygen in the air, making it difficult for the body to absorb enough oxygen for normal breathing. Examples of chemical asphyxiants include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and chlorine.
