If you suspect your child may have an anxiety disorder, there are certain signs and symptoms you should look out for.
The most common symptoms of anxiety in children include irritability, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, difficulty sleeping, difficulty controlling emotions, and physical symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and stomachaches. Your child may also become withdrawn, have trouble making friends, and experience difficulty in school.
For more specific signs of anxiety disorders, look for the following:
- Excessive worrying, especially about everyday situations such as school or social activities
- Avoidance of activities and situations due to fear or anxiety
- Excessive fear of specific things such as animals, the dark, or being alone
- Panic attacks
- Physical symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and stomachaches
- Compulsive behaviors
- Difficulty sleeping
- Trouble concentrating
- Anger or aggression
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to talk to your child and take them to see a doctor or mental health professional for an evaluation. The earlier anxiety is diagnosed and treated, the better the long-term outcome.
