Types of Reflux
Reflux refers to the involuntary regurgitation of stomach contents, including partially digested food, stomach acid, and other digestive juices. There are several different types of reflux, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), and bile acid reflux.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
GERD is the most common type of reflux. It is caused by an abnormality in the lower esophageal sphincter, a muscle that normally keeps acid and other stomach contents from entering the esophagus. When the sphincter fails to close properly, stomach contents can back up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and a sour taste in the mouth.
Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR)
LPR is similar to GERD, but it affects the upper part of the esophagus and throat. LPR is usually caused by a combination of weak lower esophageal sphincter and an increase in stomach pressure. Symptoms of LPR include hoarseness, throat clearing, a lump in the throat sensation, and difficulty swallowing.
Bile Acid Reflux
Bile acid reflux is caused by an increase in bile acids in the stomach. Bile acids are digestive juices that help break down fat in the small intestine. When there is an increase in bile acids, they can back up into the stomach and esophagus, causing irritation and burning. Symptoms of bile acid reflux include pain in the abdomen, nausea, and vomiting.
To determine which type of reflux you have, it is important to speak with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to diagnose your condition and recommend the best treatment plan.
