Symptoms of Kidney Problems

The most common symptoms of kidney problems can include:

Pain: Pain in the lower back or side can be a sign of kidney stones, infection, or other kidney problems.

Changes in Urination: If you notice changes in the color, smell, or frequency of your urine, it could be a sign of a kidney problem.

Foamy or Bubbly Urine: This can be a sign of excess protein in your urine, which is a symptom of kidney disease.

Swelling: Swelling in your feet, ankles, or face could be a sign of a kidney problem, such as kidney failure.

Fatigue: Unexplained fatigue may be a sign of a kidney problem.

Skin Rashes: Skin rashes can be a sign of a kidney problem.

Diagnosing a Kidney Problem

Your doctor may order tests to diagnose a kidney problem. Tests can include a urine test to check for proteins or blood in your urine, blood tests to check your kidney function, an ultrasound or CT scan to look for any abnormalities in the kidneys, and a kidney biopsy to take a sample of your kidney tissue.

Treating a Kidney Problem

Treatment for a kidney problem will depend on the cause. If it is an infection, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. If it is a blockage, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove the blockage. If it is a kidney disease, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and medication.

If you suspect that your kidneys may not be functioning properly, the best way to determine if something is wrong is by visiting your doctor. Your doctor will likely order a blood or urine test to check your kidney function. Other tests may also be ordered, such as a CT scan or ultrasound. Your doctor may also ask about any other health issues you may have and review your family history. If the results of the tests indicate poor kidney health, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes and/or medications.
