Symptoms of Anemia
The most common symptom of anemia is fatigue, but other symptoms could include pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, cold hands and feet, and fast or irregular heartbeat. Other signs may include headaches, brittle nails, and cravings for non-nutritive substances such as ice, dirt, or clay.
Diagnosis of Anemia
If you suspect you may have anemia, you should visit your doctor for a physical exam and blood tests to confirm the diagnosis. Your doctor may also order additional tests such as a complete blood count (CBC), a red blood cell count, a red cell distribution width (RDW) test, and a ferritin test. Depending on the results of these tests, your doctor may suggest further testing to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment of Anemia
Treatment for anemia depends on the cause and severity of the condition. If anemia is caused by a deficiency in iron, your doctor may recommend iron supplements. If anemia is caused by other conditions such as kidney disease, your doctor may recommend medications or lifestyle changes to manage the underlying condition. In some cases, a blood transfusion may be necessary.
