Symptoms of Bronchitis
The most common symptoms of bronchitis are a persistent cough, chest pain or discomfort, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Other symptoms may include wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing up mucus or phlegm.
Treating Bronchitis
Bronchitis is usually treated with antibiotics if it is caused by a bacterial infection. If it is caused by a virus, antibiotics will not help and the infection will have to run its course. In either case, other treatments such as decongestants, cough suppressants, and inhalers may be prescribed to help alleviate symptoms.
Knowing When Bronchitis is Getting Better
When bronchitis is getting better, the coughing and chest pain should start to go away. You may also notice a reduction in mucus production and a decrease in shortness of breath. If you have been prescribed medication, it is important to finish the course as prescribed. Otherwise, the infection may not be fully treated and may recur.
