Thyroid Tests
It is not possible to accurately check your thyroid at home. The only way to confirm a thyroid condition is to visit your doctor and have a blood test. There are, however, some non-invasive tests that you can do at home to give you an indication of your thyroid health.
Temperature Test
A temperature test is a simple way to check for a thyroid imbalance. You will need a thermometer and a chart to record your temperature. Take your temperature first thing in the morning and record the results. Do this for five days in a row. If your temperature is consistently below 97.6 degrees Fahrenheit, then you may have hypothyroidism.
Pulse Test
Another test you can do at home to check for thyroid dysfunction is a pulse test. To do this, you will need a watch with a second hand. Place your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist and count the number of beats for 15 seconds. Multiply this number by four to get your pulse rate. If your pulse rate is consistently below 60 beats per minute, then you may have hypothyroidism.
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Test
The TSH test is a blood test used to measure the level of TSH in your body. If your TSH is high, it may indicate that you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). If your TSH is low, it may indicate that you have an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
Conclusion
Although it is not possible to accurately check your thyroid at home, there are some non-invasive tests you can do to give you an indication of your thyroid health. If you suspect that you may have a thyroid condition, then it is important to visit your doctor and have a blood test.
