Signs of Unconsciousness
If someone is unconscious, there are several signs that can be observed to help determine if they are in fact unconscious.
Lack of response - When someone is unconscious, they will not be able to respond to stimuli. This can include verbal commands, pain, or another stimulus.
Loss of Muscle Tone- When someone is unconscious, their body may become limp and there will be a lack of muscle tone. The limbs may hang down and be loose and flaccid.
Unusual Breathing Patterns - Unconscious people may have irregular breathing or may stop breathing altogether. They may also have shallow or labored breathing.
No Eye Movement- When someone is unconscious, their eyes may be closed or open, but they will not be able to move them.
Assessing Unconsciousness
If someone is unconscious, it is important to assess the situation to determine the cause and provide appropriate medical care.
Check for Signs of Injury - Check the person for any signs of injury that may have caused them to become unconscious. Check for cuts, bruises, broken bones, or any other signs of trauma.
Check for Medical Conditions - Check the person for any signs of medical conditions that may have caused them to become unconscious. Look for signs of seizures, diabetes, low blood sugar, or other medical conditions.
Check for Drug or Alcohol Use - Check the person for any signs of drug or alcohol use that may have caused them to become unconscious. Look for empty bottles, signs of injection marks, or other signs of drug use.
Call for Medical Assistance - If you are not able to determine the cause of the person's unconsciousness, it is important to call for medical assistance.
