Ankylosis means fusion, or the joining together of two or more bones. It is a condition in which the bones of a joint become fused together, preventing movement of the joint. This can occur in any joint in the body, but is most common in the spine, hips, and shoulders.
Ankylosis can be caused by a number of different factors, including trauma, infection, or inflammation. It can also be caused by a condition known as osteoarthritis, in which the cartilage that lines the joints begins to break down, leading to bone-on-bone contact and eventual fusion. In some cases, ankylosis can be a genetic condition.
When ankylosis occurs, it can cause pain, stiffness, and a decrease in mobility. Depending on the severity of the condition, physical therapy, medications, and even surgery may be needed to treat ankylosis. In some cases, the bones can be surgically separated in order to restore some range of motion to the joint.
Ankylosis is an extremely serious condition, and it’s important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible if you think you may be experiencing it. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing long-term complications and preserving as much mobility as possible.
