Do you forget things after a coma

I recently heard about a friend who came out of a coma, and I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this. Does anyone know if it is common for people to forget things after being in a coma? Is there a chance that things like memories, skills, and abilities can be lost during a coma? If so, is there any way to help someone regain these things? Any help or advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
