I'm a bit new to this sort of thing, so I'm hoping someone could help me out. I'm wondering if it's possible to tell if someone was strangled.

The short answer to this question is yes, it is possible to tell if someone has been strangled. However, it requires a trained medical professional to accurately diagnose the cause of death. Strangulation is a form of asphyxiation caused by compression of the neck, preventing the flow of oxygen to the brain. It can be caused by a variety of means, including manual strangulation, ligature strangulation, and hanging.

Signs of Strangulation

A trained medical professional can recognize the signs of strangulation. These signs can include:

• Bruising around the neck

• Petechial hemorrhage (tiny red spots on the surface of the skin due to bleeding under the skin)

• Swelling of the face or neck

• Swelling or discoloration of the lips

• Difficulty breathing or speaking

• Pressure marks on the neck

• Loss of consciousness

• Abnormal heart rate

Diagnosis of Strangulation

In addition to the physical signs, a trained medical professional may also order tests to help diagnose strangulation. These tests can include:

• X-rays to look for fractures or broken bones in the neck

• CT scans to look for bruising or swelling of the neck and throat

• Blood tests to look for elevated levels of carbon dioxide

• An electrocardiogram to look for abnormal heart rhythm

• A laryngoscopy to look for swelling or discoloration of the vocal cords

• A post-mortem examination to look for evidence of strangulation

If strangulation is suspected, a trained medical professional should be consulted as soon as possible.

Treatment of Strangulation

If strangulation is confirmed, the victim should receive immediate medical attention. Treatment may include oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, and medications to reduce swelling. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair any damage caused by the strangulation.
