Pancreatic Cancer: Overview

Pancreatic cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the pancreas, a small organ located behind the stomach. It is one of the most serious forms of cancer, and it is difficult to detect and treat. Pancreatic cancer can be either exocrine (cancer that starts in the exocrine cells of the pancreas) or neuroendocrine (cancer that starts in the neuroendocrine cells of the pancreas). Although it is a very serious disease, there are ways to reduce the risk of developing pancreatic cancer and to stop it from progressing.

Risk Factors for Pancreatic Cancer

There are a number of risk factors that may increase a person's risk for developing pancreatic cancer. These include: age, family history, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and certain genetic mutations. It is important to be aware of these risk factors and to speak to your doctor about ways to reduce your risk.

Prevention of Pancreatic Cancer

The best way to prevent pancreatic cancer is to reduce your risk factors. This includes quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly. Additionally, it is important to be aware of your family history and to speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.

Diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is usually diagnosed through a combination of medical tests, such as blood tests, imaging tests, and biopsies. Your doctor may also recommend a physical examination and medical history.

Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer

Treatment for pancreatic cancer depends on the stage of the cancer and the patient's overall health. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these treatments.

Can You Stop Pancreatic Cancer?

Although there is no sure way to prevent pancreatic cancer, it is possible to reduce your risk. By reducing your risk factors, such as smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly, you can reduce your chances of developing pancreatic cancer. Additionally, it is important to speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.
