Can you smell methane gas

I'm hoping to get some help from other forum users on this topic. Can you smell methane gas? I've read that methane has no smell, but I've also heard that methane has a distinct smell. Can someone please explain this to me? Is it possible to smell methane gas? If so, what does it smell like? Are there any health or safety concerns associated with smelling methane gas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is Methane Gas?

Methane gas is a colorless and odorless gas that is the main component of natural gas. It is a hydrocarbon that is found in abundance, making up about 16% of the Earth's atmosphere. It is also the primary component of biogas, a type of renewable energy source. Methane gas is produced by natural processes such as the decomposition of organic matter and by the burning of fossil fuels.

Can You Smell Methane Gas?

Methane gas is odorless, so it is not possible to detect it using your sense of smell. However, in order to make it detectable by humans, a chemical compound called mercaptan is added to the gas. Mercaptan is a foul-smelling substance that adds a distinct, unpleasant odor to the methane gas, making it easier to detect leaks.
