Can you have chronic pancreatitis with normal lipase

I'm looking for help understanding if it is possible to have chronic pancreatitis with normal lipase levels. I've been told that elevated lipase levels are a tell-tale sign of pancreatitis, but I've also heard that it's possible to have it without any increases in lipase.

Yes, it is possible to have chronic pancreatitis with normal lipase. People with chronic pancreatitis often experience abdominal pain and may have elevated levels of pancreatic enzymes, such as lipase, in their blood. However, some people with chronic pancreatitis may have normal levels of lipase, which can make diagnosis difficult. Other tests, such as imaging studies and genetic tests, may be necessary to confirm a diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis. Treatment for chronic pancreatitis typically involves lifestyle changes, medication, and/or surgery.

Yes, it is possible to have chronic pancreatitis with normal lipase levels. This is known as "idiopathic pancreatitis" and it is caused by inflammation of the pancreas for an unknown reason. It is possible to have this condition with normal lipase levels because the lipase enzyme is only one of the many substances produced by the pancreas and it is not always affected by inflammation. Other tests such as imaging or biopsy may be needed to diagnose this condition. Treatment of idiopathic pancreatitis typically involves dietary modifications, pain relief medications, and possibly antibiotics.

Yes, it is possible to have chronic pancreatitis with normal lipase levels. This is because lipase is not the only enzyme that is produced by the pancreas. Chronic pancreatitis affects the entire pancreas, which affects the production of several enzymes, not just lipase. Therefore, a patient can present with chronic pancreatitis and have normal lipase levels, while other enzymes may be elevated or reduced. The diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis is based on a combination of factors, including imaging, medical history, and physical examination.

Yes, it is possible to have chronic pancreatitis with normal lipase levels. This is because lipase levels can range from normal to high in chronic pancreatitis, depending on the severity of inflammation in the pancreas. Furthermore, other tests such as CT scans, ultrasounds and endoscopic procedures can be used to diagnose chronic pancreatitis in patients with normal lipase levels.
