Can a coma last for days

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. Has anyone had any experience with a coma lasting for days? I recently learned that a close family member has been in a coma for several days now and I'm wondering if this is normal and if there's anything we can do to help. It's been difficult to get information about comas, so I'm hoping to get some advice from other people who have gone through something similar. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
